How to answer FAFSA® student college information questions

Here’s a guide for how to add colleges where you want to send your 2024-25 FAFSA® info, provide consent to the IRS, and sign your application.

Colleges

Why do they need this info?

  • The FAFSA® needs to know which schools you’re applying to so your financial info can be shared with them.
  • Schools will use your FAFSA® info to figure out your financial need and create your financial aid offer.

Can I skip these questions?

No

What else should I know?

  • The order in which you list schools may affect your eligibility for state aid. Check StudentAid.gov/order for details. For federal aid, it doesn’t matter what order you list your selected schools.
  • You can add or delete schools after you submit your FAFSA®.
  • There’s a 20 school code limit for the FAFSA®. If you add a new school it will replace one of the schools previously listed.

How to answer these questions

  • Search for each college by entering name, address, city, and state for each college OR just enter the Federal School Code.
  • The Federal School Code can likely be found on the school’s financial aid website.
  • You can have your FAFSA® sent to a maximum of 20 schools.
